Job Description

Context: Provides general administrative and limited programmatic support for the Sierra Club’s Organizing Department. Participates in the development of strategies and priorities to drive progress on organizing and power building goals. Preference for position to be based in Oakland, CA or Washington, DC.

Scope: This position will work directly with the Organizing Department leadership, staff, and volunteers to support the effective daily operations of and help implement strategies to help drive progress on the organization’s power building goals. Work will include providing administration support for the Director, Deputy and Regional Directors and department teams, including documentation and record keeping; scheduling, departmental expenses and meeting logistics; event planning; providing support to and interacting with organizers, volunteers, and partners.

Job Activities:

Provides administrative support to departmental staff, volunteers and teams, including documentation and record keeping, scheduling, departmental contracts and expenses, meeting logistics, setting up and running webinars, maintaining list-serves, and other internal communications systems. Reviews and reconciles staff travel, credit, and out-of-pocket expenses in Concur. Provides onboarding and ongoing training to Sierra Club Field staff on financial, travel, logistical, operational and administrative matters. Provides support for volunteers, including coordinating volunteer calls and meetings, note-taking, and following through on action items and responding to Sierra Club member inquiries. Participates in departmental planning and strategizing. Supports research projects, creates organizing templates for the Field Desk and other materials. Prepares briefing materials and other meeting preparation. Event planning and logistics. Performs miscellaneous duties as required.

Standard Additional Hours:

The standard Sierra Club work week is 37.5 hours. However, this job requires occasional additional hours and overtime to meet special deadlines, projects, other staff absences, or emergencies. Under these circumstances, overtime will rarely exceed 5 hours weekly, or 15 hours on a monthly basis.

Knowledge & Skills:

2 years experience in organizing, volunteer or staff 2 years of experience in the areas of administration, logistics, event planning and team coordination. Strong organizational skills and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in work project teams Some knowledge of environmental, social justice and human rights related issues. Commitment to advancing equity and justice. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to interact cooperatively and effectively with public, staff and volunteers. Proficient in computers, word processing, Excel, and research experience. Experience in Concur and/or Netsuite preferred. Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required. A background check will be required upon job acceptance.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union or Sierra Employee Alliance, depending on location.
