Job Title: Campaign RepresentativeDepartment: Program DepartmentLocation: New York, NYC preferred locationReports To: New York Beyond Coal, Senior Campaign Representative, ManagerContext: The Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign is an internationally recognized climate campaign that has inspired a global movement away from coal. This position plans and guides the strategies and activities of the Campaign to win a just and equitable transition in the electric sector from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy in New York.Scope: The Campaign Representative is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the Beyond Coal campaign strategies and activities in New York and as assigned. Collaborates with internal departments, programs, strategic external partners, coalitions, the Atlantic chapter and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of strategic coordinated campaigns to move New York off of fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy and energy efficiency, with no new natural gas infrastructure and increasing electrification of transportation and the building sector. Ensures strategic alignment of the state campaign with regional and national goals and objectives. Sets priorities for spending campaign resources and expenses. Creates, coordinates and executes, as appropriate, utility-based or state-based campaign work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. Oversees day-to-day operational aspects of campaign, acting as a project manager without direct supervisory authority over staff on the team while modeling and supporting a team culture of mutual accountability and dependability. Prepares and submits weekly progress reports. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, strategic partners and other organizations, and the public.Job Activities:Within a collaborative framework and in consultation with key stakeholders, leads and facilitates the development and implementation of a strategic campaign plan, goals and objectives, for the Sierra Club’s efforts to move New York’s electric sector to 100% clean energy. Develops, executes and manages a strategic campaign, working in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapter, Communications Department, Organizing and Digital Strategies capacities, Sierra Club’s programs, and volunteer leadership to ensure the execution of a campaign to win measurable yearly progress in transitioning from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy and equitably scale clean energy solutions.In collaboration with Sierra Club stakeholders, engages key strategic partners in frontline communities, labor partners,, elected and appointed decision makers, clean energy buisness leaders, investor owned utilities and other strategic partners and stakeholders to ensure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities for a just and equitable clean, renewable energy transition. Supports and provides technical and policy guidance and training to staff and volunteers. Acts as a team leader, supporting a culture of mutual dependability, learning, growth, and offers an inspiring and motivating environment for staff and volunteers.Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion. Designs and implements campaign strategies and tactics that are rooted in an equitable transition to clean, renewable energy. Works with Communications department staff and other appropriate stakeholders on media outreach activities related to the campaign/program. Serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer and partner organization media exposure.In cooperation with Advancement Department, participates in donor and foundation solicitation and cultivation, including meeting with funders and preparation of funder presentations, proposals, and reports.Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic partners and coalitions.Supports Sierra Club’s power building goals by ensuring campaign strategies and activities are designed to build a base of leaders and increase and deepen strategic partnerships. This includes, but is not limited to ensuring Sierra Club participates in strategically aligned coalitions and coalition efforts. Works to develop volunteers and to ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.Seasonal Activities:Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines, staff absences and vacancies, and during peak activity periods. Weekend and/or evening work may be required.Knowledge & Skills:At least 3 years’ experience in the planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns or strategic initiatives. Experience should include at least some of the following activities: planning, strategy development and implementation, project management, organizing, lobbying, policy drafting or review, media relations, and working with community, political, labor, and business leaders. Strong grasp of energy policy and regulatory landscape will be weighed heavily; experience in a different field that includes knowledge of legal/policy/regulatory regimes will be considered.Demonstrated familiarity with and commitment to incorporating principles of equity, inclusion, and justice into campaign process and outcomes. Demonstrated cultural competence.Demonstrated leadership experience, working within a team structure, and ability to effectively convene multiple stakeholders and impartially mediate competing priorities in service to a collective vision and goals.Sense of humor, patience, strong emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to create rapport and inspire trust..Takes initiative to identify and act on new opportunities and provide creative, timely problem-solving.Project management and facilitation skills.Excellent written and oral communication skills.
