Scope: The Sierra Club Michigan Environmental Justice and Political Internship will focus on assisting Sierra Club national and Chapter staff based in Detroit in protecting the environment and public health through community education and organizing about EJ and political issues in Detroit. The intern will take on activities that assist Sierra Club in expanding its effectiveness in supporting communities facing environmental injustice in Detroit, Ecorse, River Rouge, and Dearborn, and building a base for political power.
Job Activities:Organize one virtual event a month Partner with key constituencies and community organizations for event organizing Build our base of volunteers in impacted communities—by recruiting participants from local campuses including Wayne State, WCCC, U of D Mercy, outreach efforts to neighborhood organizations and community groups, and planning events with community members that meet community needs Creating digital communications to support organizing efforts Use turn-out efforts and event follow-up efforts to build a working list of volunteers ready to engage at key points in EJ campaigns
Knowledge & Skills:Good writing and research skills Knowledge or interest in environmental issues Knowledge or interest in politics and the legislative process Able to take direction on projects and work independently Proficient in Microsoft Office applications Experience with Google drive, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and email Bonus if applicants are familiar with database management applications like the Voter Activation Network (VAN) and Salesforce.
This is a category 99 non-exempt position.
